All aboard?! Let’s head to the playas de Puerto Rico for some fun in the sun!
How to define the playas de Puerto Rico? Breathtakingly beautiful, endless scenery, picture perfect white or honey gold sand and crystal clear waters are just some of the words that come to mind about Puerto Rico’s beaches. Whatever you desire, sand, sea or surf, the playas de Puerto Rico offers it all and then some.
On the in Caribbean island of Puerto Rico, everyone takes time out to enjoy the beach. Therefore on weekends, you can expect to see hundreds of locals and their families enjoying a beach day out.
As a hint, if you prefer solitude and relaxation, you might want to head to the beaches located on the Southern end of the island; as the beaches along the Western coast is where you’ll find most of the action; notably surfing.
Here are some of the more popular playas de Puerto Rico:
Condado Beach, Puerto Rico.

Condado Beach; You can find several urban beaches in Condado. Being a metropolitan area, these beaches do not offer much shade but authorities have sought to alleviate this problem by planting several coconut trees at some beaches.
Condado beaches are spectacular as they are found directly in the city. On my cruise day out in Puerto Rico, I visited the beach next to the Ben and Jerry’s in downtown Condado.
This is a beautiful beach where you can relax in the beach chairs provided, go for a walk on the short pier or venture into the not so calm waters for a mid-day swim.
Then if you get thirsty, Ben and Jerry is just a few steps away ready to serve up a wide range of refreshments.
Rincón Beach; taking its name from its location, the beaches of Rincón are without contest, the best surfing beaches in all of Puerto Rico.
As Rincón is also a former site of the World Surfing Championships, surfers from all over the world travel annually to this so called ‘Caribbean Hawaii,’ to experience its waters. Throughout the months of November to April is when the majourity of world surfers visit Rincón, as during this time surf is up and winter waves here can get as high as 25ft.
Playa Higüero or Higüero Beach is considered by many to be Rincón’s best surfing beach. During the calmer summer months Rincón’s beaches are also good for swimming, snorkeling and sailing.
Playa de Ponce; as the name suggests, this beach is located in Puerto Rico’s second largest city, Ponce. The waters here are much calmer than elsewhere on the island which makes this beach perfect for a nice relaxing swim and other water sporting adventures such as snorkeling and sailing.
Boquerón Beach is best known for sailing, scuba diving and its magnificent scenery. Located in a section of the island known as the Cape Cod of Puerto Rico; Boquerón is where several local fishermen regularly go to catch fresh oyster and other fish. This is then sold to buyers from several small shops that occupy this beach.
Luiquillo Beach is located just east of San Juan and is a favorite spot for family outings. The public amenities offered here include lifeguard, changing rooms, restaurants and bars. A beautiful beach, the waters here are much clearer than are to be found elsewhere in San Juan.
Ocean Park Beach attracts more adult visitors and is especially popular with single gay men looking for companionship. Good for swimming, strolling and relaxing, Ocean Park is also where you can unwind without much interference.
Playa Flamenco is perhaps Puerto Rico's most popular beach. On weekends and holidays, Playa Flamenco becomes crowded with thousands of locals who come to swim in its clear waters or simply lounge on its perfect white sand. A nearby reef provides the perfect attraction for snorkelers and when surf’s up, surfing enthusiasts can also enjoy this beach; indeed there is something at Playa Flamenco for everyone.
Now that you have an idea about the playas de Puerto Rico, all that’s left for me to say is have loads of fun on either your cruise day out or your cruise and stay vacation!
