Getting married in Jamaica is super easy!

Thinking about getting married in Jamaica? You’ve come to the right place for information.

As I am Jamaican, you can rest assured that the info here comes straight from the horse’s mouth, so to speak.

Here’s all you need to know.

The first step in getting married in Jamaica is to obtain a Minister’s license

To do this, a visit to the offices of the Ministry of Justice located at 2 Oxford Road, New Kingston (876-906-4923) is required.

The prerequisite documents for obtaining a Minister’s license are birth certificate or passport and another form of national ID. If either spouse had been previously married, the divorce declaration is also needed, if widowed; a certificate of death must be produced. or what is more commonly called a marriage license.

You will be given two forms at the Ministry of Justice, a form of Marriage Declaration and a blank Minister’s License. Both must be filled out in the presence of a Justice of the Peace (JP) and one other witness.

The completed forms must then be taken to the stamp office located at 11 Harbour Street in Down Town Kingston, to be stamped. The stamped documents must then be returned to the Ministry of Justice to be made into a legal document. The fee for a Minister’s license is J$4,000.00.

OK, you do remember me mentioning that marriage in Jamaica was easy, right? Here's the reason below:

You do not need to appear in person to apply for your marriage license; your wedding coordinator or officiating pastor etc. on the island can do this on your behalf; you only need to be in Jamaica 24 hours before your wedding is due.

Simply fax or email copies of the required documents. The application process takes a day to complete and a license is only valid for three months.

After you have obtained your marriage license, you can then proceed to The Registrar General’s Department where you can set a date for your wedding to be conducted and make arrangements to receive your marriage certificate. The cost to do this is J$9,000.00.

If you are planning something a bit more elaborate, then you may take your documents back to your pastor or wedding coordinator and set your date. Of course you should also be aware that the cost would be significantly higher.

Please note that the cost for your marriage license is separate and apart from the Minister or wedding coordinator charges.

As a guide, a pastor can charge between US$200-300 to process your documentation and perform your wedding ceremony.

For further info re getting married in Jamaica, you may contact the Registrar General’s Department located at Twickenham Park, Spanish Town at Telephone# 876-749-0550 or visit their website @ www.rgd.gov.jm.

Have a great wedding!
